Spheres of Discourse

// SPHERE ONE

High School English Teacher

In my role as an English I teacher, I am mainly concerned with creating an instructional environment that (1) promotes inquiry and exploration and (2) maximizes skills-transfer to the next grade level(s). I teach freshmen, so I am dealing with students who are encountering analytical writing for the first time. The things I teach them in my class may set the tone for the rest of their academic career. I want to make sure that they understand and buy into the act of literary analysis and analytical writing before they engage in it. This is often challenging as the pressure that instructors are under regarding state testing is quite palpable but so far I have made several impassioned soap-box style speeches in the attempt to generate student excitement / motivation. I also always encourage my students to write about something they care about, whatever that may be.
